Kitchener Chess Festival

The Kitchener Chess Festival is an annual event that celebrates the game of chess in the city of Kitchener. Attracting chess enthusiasts from across Ontario and in fact Canada and the U.S., this festival offers a platform for players of all skill levels to showcase their talents, participate in competitive tournaments, and engage in the rich culture surrounding the timeless game of chess.

2024 Ontario Senior

  The Kitchener Chess Festival crowned the 2024 Ontario Seniors and Veterans Champions.  


  • Benjamin Fradkin is the 2024 Ontario Seniors (65+) Champion!
  • Michael Barron is the 2024 Ontario Veterans (50+) Champion!

2024 Ontario Senior

  The Kitchener Chess Festival is pleased to host the 2024 Ontario Seniors Championships.  

  • The competition will be conducted in 2 divisions, namely 50+ and 65+
  • Separate sections for Women will also be contested if we have enough participants. In each case, players must be at least 50 or 65 years of age by December 31 of this year
  • Both sections will be CFC and FIDE Rated
  • Pairings will be based on the must recent published CFC ratings
  • The entry fees, playing schedule and time control will be the same as the other sections  

Kitchener Chess Festival tournament details

Sections

Tournament Sections

  • Seniors 65+
  • Veterans 50+
  • Over 1800 CFC rating
  • Over 1400 CFC rating
  • Over 1000 CFC rating
  • Rookie section

Players play in the section that corresponds to their rating (ie: if your rating is 1550 you MUST play in the Over 1400 - no "playing up")

 Sections with fewer than 6 players will be merged with an adjacent section, preferably the next higher one. 


Eligibility for the Rookie section:

  • Players are rated under 1000 or unrated
  • Games will be played with the same time control as all other sections - 60 min +30 sec
  • No CFC Membership required!
  • Rated CFC
  • Top 2 sections FIDE rated

Entry Fees

  • $125 per entry after August 20, before September 2
  • $150 per entry after September 2 or onsite

Entries after September 5 are not guaranteed a first round swiss pairing

Refund policy: 85% up to August 31, no refunds after that.

Prizes

Placement Prizes

Rating Category sections

  • 1st place: $300
  • 2nd place: $200
  • 3rd place: $100

Sections with 3 players or less will be awarded first prize only 


Seniors and Veterans sections

  • 1st place: $Based on 90% of entries
  • 2nd place: $Based on 90% of entries
  • 3rd place: $Based on 90% of entries


Team Prize

(4 player team - maximum of 2 players from one section)

  • Top Team - $400


Family Prize

(2 player team - Immediate family members - siblings, spouses, parents, grandparents)

  • Top Family - $200
