The Kitchener Chess Festival is an annual event that celebrates the game of chess in the city of Kitchener. Attracting chess enthusiasts from across Ontario and in fact Canada and the U.S., this festival offers a platform for players of all skill levels to showcase their talents, participate in competitive tournaments, and engage in the rich culture surrounding the timeless game of chess.
The Kitchener Chess Festival crowned the 2024 Ontario Seniors and Veterans Champions.

We are doing it again - we are extending the regular registration fee deadline to FRIDAY, September 6 NOON. Register and pay by that time and you can still pay the regular entry fee of $125. First Round pairings will be posted Friday evening. Late registrations pay $150 and may not receive a swiss pairing for round 1.

The Kitchener Chess Festival has just recently experienced IT issues with email.
If you have received a confirmation of registration, don't worry, you are in. If you have registered and not received a confirmation, please pop a quick email to us (address or form below) and we will confirm with you.
Consequent to this IT issue, we have decided to extend the early-bird discounted price of entry to a new deadline of Tuesday, August 20.

Tournament Sections
Players play in the section that corresponds to their rating (ie: if your rating is 1550 you MUST play in the Over 1400 - no "playing up")
Sections with fewer than 6 players will be merged with an adjacent section, preferably the next higher one.
Eligibility for the Rookie section:
Entries after September 5 are not guaranteed a first round swiss pairing
Refund policy: 85% up to August 31, no refunds after that.

Rating Category sections
Sections with 3 players or less will be awarded first prize only
Seniors and Veterans sections
Team Prize
(4 player team - maximum of 2 players from one section)
Family Prize
(2 player team - Immediate family members - siblings, spouses, parents, grandparents)

Time Control: Game in 60 minutes with 30 second Fischer increment
Tie Breaks: Tiebreaks to determine of award of trophies will be:
(Prize moneys are added together and divided evenly between tied players)
Forfeit: Failure to arrive at the board within 30 minutes of the round start will result in forfeiture of the game
Byes: 1 half point bye, if requested before the first round, can be requested for rounds 1 - 4 - All sections

We recommend parking in lots B or C and entering the Aud via the entrance at "13" on the above map. (Access is the road into the Aud from Ottawa St.)
The tournament will be in the "Viewing Lounge", which is on the right as you enter the main lobby from entrance 13.
